United orders $14 billion in Boeing aircraft to save fuel
United Airlines has just ordered 150 planes from Boeing at a list price of about $14 billion.
United’s order includes 100 new 737-MAX-9 craft, Boeing’s just-rolled-off-the-runway version of its best-selling model. Aircraft are set for delivery in 2018. United also ordered 50 of the existing version 737-900ERs which they will fuse into the fleet in late 2013.
United claims the purpose of the order is to replace older aircraft rather than to boost growth. United will replace their older Boeing 757-200s, aircraft which Boeing has stopped making.
United already flies 43 Boeing 737s, which seat 173 passengers. The new 737 Max is the biggest craft in its category and seats up to 215 flyers.
The new aircraft burn 15% less fuel than the 757-200s.
