Universal system for grading UK hotels in the pipeline
A universal system for grading accommodation in the UK could be in place by next year.
The initiative has the support of VisitBritain, VisitScotland, Wales Tourist Board, AA and RAC. Following a review involving these fives bodies and input from the industry, the scheme could be underway from next year.
Representatives from the relevant organisations first gathered to discuss the scheme in July last year. If the system gets the go-ahead self-catering accommodation could be graded from next year and hotels and B&Bs from January 2006.
The current system, which sees a number of organisations submitting grades, is confusing for the consumer and makes comparison difficult. VisitBritain chief executive Tom Wright said he hopes the scheme would raise quality in the industry.
Despite pledging its support, the AA said it would continue to offer an independent inspection service and recognition.
