Unusual offer for conventioneers and tourists: free medical care

Saturday, 28 Jun, 2011 0

Promoters of Panama as a worldwide convention center cite not only what they call the “most advanced and modern conference center in Latin America” but also its highly unusual free emergency medical care for all tourists, whether they are there as a group or individual travelers.

The country this year started offering free health insurance for tourists in emergency cases. The service is offered to all visitors entering Panama by the Tocumen International Airport and has coverage for the first 30 days of a visitor’s stay.

The insurance policy will cover incidents such as accidental death (up to US$20,000), hospitalization and medical expenses for injuries due to accidents or in case of contracting a disease in Panama (up to $7,000), cost of dental emergency (up to $2,000), and others.

The ATLAPA Conference Center itself has a capacity for up to 10,500 people, featuring 24 meeting rooms and a 2,806-seat theatre/auditorium.

“Moreover, there is currently an ongoing project to build a new convention center, with a modern and contemporary design, which will greatly surpass the ability of the current ATLAPA Convention Center,” says a press release.

Other lures, says a release, include:

“The recent tourism boom in Panama has also positioned it as an ideal destination for incentive tourism. Its strategic geographical location, warm climate throughout the year, a wide variety of fauna and flora along the jungles and mountains, and countless islands and beaches has been increasingly captivating European tourism.”

Its convenient airport has also been widely acclaimed and has help bring in new hotels such as the opening of the first Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Latin America. The Starwood brand also has announced two new Westin properties. And in July, the first Trump Hotel Collection outside the US will open as the Trump Ocean Club International Hotel & Tower.
