Upswing in gite bookings reported after years of decline
Brittany Ferries has reported a turnaround in French gite holiday bookings for 2007 after years of decline.
The ferry company says bookings are currently running almost 20% ahead of last year as more people consider holidaying by car in France.
Improvements in gite accommodation standards together with a backlash against flying by families on a budget have been cited as reasons for improved booking levels.
General manager holidays Christiane Barker said: “I believe this is due to two main reasons – firstly, the quality of properties has improved dramatically, so that gites may no longer be considered ‘basic’ and, secondly, they appeal to a family on a budget seeking a hassle-free relaxing holiday as compared to the frustrations and hidden costs of flying.
“Taking the car to France is back on the agenda for many families.”
