US airlines headed for foreign destinations
Airlines have restored air service to foreign destinations to pre 9-11 levels.
US and foreign carriers this month are offering about 49,200 non-stop departures from the lower 48 states to all parts of the globe, according to a USA TODAY analysis of data provided by Back Aviation Solutions.
US airline strategies of expanding more lucrative international flights are among reasons for the upswing.
“The attraction for airlines right now remains international,” said Graham Atkinson, who heads up United Airline’s worldwide sales.
United, which is the second largest carrier in the US, is expanding its international schedule more than any other airline. It has added 14% to that market, while at the same time United is shrinking its domestic schedule.
