US airlines offering refunds for bookings to Zika affected areas

Tuesday, 27 Jan, 2016 0
United Airlines said it will waive any fees for travelers with flight bookings who decide not to travel to Zika affected destinations.

The carrier will let customers postpone their trips or receive a full refund.

The offer is good for all countries under the Centers for Disease Control’s current travel advisory.

These countries include Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Paraguay, Panama, Puerto Rico, St Martin, Suriname and Venezuela.

"We are offering customers who are traveling to the affected regions the opportunity to rebook at a later date or receive a full refund," said United spokesman Charles Hobart.

American Airlines announced a stricter policy, offering refunds to pregnant women planning to travel to some parts of Central America including El Salvador, Honduras, Panama and Guatemala.

Delta Air Lines says it is continuing to monitor the situation.

The World Health Organization said this week it expects the Zika virus will eventually spread throughout the region including North America.

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus linked to birth defects and has affected more than one million people in Brazil, the AP reported.
