US airport staff threaten Thanksgiving strike

Airlines at the second busiest airport in the nation are making contingency plans for major disruption over the Thanksgiving holiday period.

Thanksgiving travel plans could be severely impacted at Chicago O’Hare as airport support staff are expected to go ahead with a threatened strike later this week.

The Service Employees International Union Local 1 is expected to announce a strike date on Monday and hundreds could walk off the job over the holiday period.

The union is speaking up for hundreds of sub contracted workers employed mostly as aircraft cabin cleaners and janitors.

Last week they voted in favour of taking industrial action over working conditions and a wage dispute.

"It is not their intent to disrupt operations, but to make their voices heard and have their concerns of wage theft, safety and working conditions to be taken seriously," union spokeswoman Izabela Miltko-Ivkovich told CNNMoney.

One of the airport’s biggest carriers, United Airlines, said it has taken steps ‘to ensure a safe and on-time operation for our customers’, should the strike go ahead over Thanksgiving.
