US FAA restores Malaysia’s Category 1 safety standard rating
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration upgraded Malaysia’s air safety rating to Category 1, opening up the potential to expand flights to the United States.
It was hailed by Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong.
“With the return to Category 1, our airlines can now mount new flights to the US and have code sharing with American carriers. There is no more barriers now,” said Wee,
“This is good news after the COVID-19 pandemic.”
AirAsia is the only Malaysia based carrier that has been flying to the US.
It has a Kuala Lumpur – Honolulu route.
The FAA had downgraded Malaysia’s safety rating just before Covid.
Malaysia Airlines says it will restart plans to increase flight options with airline partners, including American Airlines but hasn’t given any specific plans.
