US flight makes emergency landing after engine explodes
A US flight made an emergency landing after an engine exploded and flames engulfed one side of the aircraft shortly after take-off from Dallas.
The Spirit Airlines passengers reported that the Airbus A319 was shaking for several minutes before they heard a loud bang and flames shot out of the engine.
The explosion occurred about 20 minutes into a two-hour flight to Atlanta, forcing the aircraft to return to Dallas.
A Spirit Airlines spokeswoman said the aircraft landed safely and there were no reported injuries.
An investigation into the cause of the mechanical failure on flight 165 is being carried out.
