US Gulf coast braces for another battering
HURRICANE Wilma, the most powerful storm ever recorded in the Atlantic is now hurtling toward Mexico and the US coast with terrifying winds.
The US National Hurricane Centre warned the storm, with winds of 260km/h, continued to hurtle toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, popular among American and European tourists.
“The storm is very powerful and very threatening,” said Mexican President Vicente Fox, adding authorities were prepared for its impact.
While Cuba prepared to evacuate 100,000 people from its western coast, tens of thousands of tourists were ordered out of Cancun, Mexico, and the Florida Keys island chain.
This is now the 12th Hurricane of the season, with Florida bracing for the storm to hit this Saturday.
A climate study released Monday said the continental United States will face more extreme temperatures during the next century and worse rainfall along the Gulf Coast.
The study, published by the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, warned that greenhouse gases will likely swell to twice their current levels by the end of the century.
