US tourist killed in Jamaica jet ski accident
A US tourist has been killed in a jet ski accident in the resort town of Negril, Jamaica.
The Jamaican police force identified the dead man as Thomas Torres, aged 63 from Las Vegas.
Police spokesperson Carla Francis said he was struck by the watercraft while swimming off the beach and according to witnesses, the rider fled the scene.
One person has been detained by the police but no charges have yet been brought while investigations continue.
Due to growing concerns about unregulated water sports operators, tourism minister Dr Wykeham McNeill announced a suspension of new watercraft for commercial purposes last October.
He said there would be a crackdown on illegal operators and stronger enforcement of regulations for the commercial water sports industry.
In August, a similar accident occurred causing the death of a seven-year old Jamaican girl in the beach resort of Ocho Rios, and the rider, a tourist from India was charged with manslaughter.
