Vegas Monorail will ease airport congestion
Traffic from Las Vegas’ McCarren International Airport to the resort corridor is well known for its frequent congestion, but that is changing.
The Las Vegas Monorail Company plans to start construction this year on an alternative transportation system — a new monorail.
“With plans for more than 40,000 new hotel rooms in the next few years and an expected increase in visitor volume, we must continue to give our visitors what they can’t experience anywhere else,” said Curtis Myles, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Monorail Company.
He said that extending the existing monorail will provide a fast, convenient and reliable transportation option for visitors as soon as they arrive in Las Vegas.
The expansion plans to the airport include five proposed stations with two stops at McCarran: the first at Terminal 1, the existing main terminal, and a second at the soon-to-be-built Terminal 3.
The airport extension will be roughly four miles long and will run on concrete guideways up to 100 feet above street level.
The expansion project will be funded by private investments, maintaining the Las Vegas Monorail’s status as the first completely privately-funded transportation system.
