Fines for roller-skating, undue dawdling, or exposing the wrong sort of flesh

Visitors to Venice will have to adhere to a new set of rules imposed by the city’s authorities – or face on-the-spot fines.

With the main tourist season in full swing, the city council has introduced the ten rules – dubbed the Ten Commandments by “wags” at the Daily Mail – which include not picnicking in the wrong place, exposing too much flesh or rollerskating, let alone all three at the same time. The Mail reports that visitors to Venice will be given leaflets, printed in English, French and German, with the headline: “Venice is yours as well, so respect it.”

The rules, as interpreted by the Mail, are: 1. Keep to the right on narrow side streets; 2. No roller-skating or skateboarding; 3. No bare chests (men) or bikini tops (women); 4. No undue dawdling on bridges; 5. No picnics in St Mark’s Square or on church steps; 6. No bulky luggage on the city’s boats; 7. No dropping litter; 8. No swimming near St Marks Square; 9. Fines for those caught out by high flood water; 10. Only use authorised gondolas.

The city mayor Paulo Costa, is quoted as saying: “These new rules will help alleviate the tension that the great number of tourists bring to the city every year. What we want to do is inform visitors so that they behave in a well-educated and respectful manner.”
