Victoria takes credit for China partnership

MELBOURNE – A partnership between Tourism Victoria and China UnionPay (CUP) credit cards will allow Victorian tourism businesses to offer their products to the holders of more than 1.8 billion CUP credit cards throughout China.

The partnership will also make it easier for Chinese travellers to explore tourism destinations, experience Melbourne’s shopping culture and withdraw cash, by increasing the recognition and acceptance of China UnionPay in Victoria.

CUP cardholders can withdraw cash from more than 7,000 ATMs in Australia and make purchases at nearly 30,000 merchants

CUP entered the Australian market in 2006 in co-operation with National Australia Bank (NAB) and Australia’s largest independent ATM operator, Cashcard.

According to official statistics, China is now Victoria’s third largest inbound tourism market.

In 2008, Victoria welcomed 160,000 Chinese tourists who stayed a total of 4,260,000 nights, an increase of 12.2 percent and 16.3 percent respectively compared to 2007.
