Virgin America orders 10 A321 Neo jets

Tuesday, 16 Dec, 2015 0
Virgin America has confirmed an order for 10 new Airbus A321 Neo jets that will give it a capacity boost per flight by more than 20%.

The new A321 Neo will increase available seats per flight to 185 seats from its current 150 seats on the current A320 model.

The new A321 jets have a longer fuselage and Virgin said seat sizes will not be reduced.

It will boost the Virgin fleet to 73 planes when it takes delivery in 2017.

The new planes are 20% more fuel efficient than current Airbus planes, the company said, and each plane will cut carbon emissions by 5,000 tons a year.

"I’m proud to say that Virgin America already has one of the most fuel efficient fleets in the US and this announcement only builds on that," said Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group and backer of Virgin America.

"It’s a generational change in terms of technology, with not only fuel efficiency and reduction in carbon burn but also it cuts the noise level in half and it has 35 additional seats at very little added cost," said Virgin America CEO David Cush.

Cush said the new planes will be deployed on transcontinental routes and possibly on a new Los Angeles to Hawaii route.
