Virgin installing Android powered in-flight entertainment
Virgin America is upgrading its Red in-flight entertainment system to run on Android-based software.
The first three Airbus A320 aircraft will begin flying with new seat-back touch screens later this month with a planned rollout fleet wide by 2016.
Virgin says the system will offer three times the storage capacity and can play video content in 720p resolution.
It will also have upgraded interactive maps and enable passengers to play video games.
"Travellers can swipe, pinch and zoom as they would any other mobile device. It will make it possible for us to further connect, personalise and expand Red," Virgin said in a blog post.
The current Red IFE system lets passengers watch live television, movies on demand and listen to music.
It is part of the ‘revolutionary’ changes planned for in-flight service that Virgin CEO David Cush hinted at last month, allowing the carrier to generate more ancillary revenue.
