VisitEngland puts value on Christmas break
Overnight trips this Christmas and New Year will generate £1.9bn for the UK economy, according to VisitEngland.
The majority of that – £1.6bn – will be spent in England.
VisitEngland’s latest Trip Tracker survey reveals 10.1m Brits (20% of the adult population) will take an overnight trip in the UK, with 8.6m people (17%) planning to take that trip in England.
The majority (33.7m people or 67% of the population) will travel to see friends and family; 18.1m adults plan to do some post-Christmas sales shopping; 12.1m plan to visit a Christmas market and 7.5m will take part in other Christmas activities.
Minister for Tourism Helen Grant said: "The Christmas holidays provide a great economic boost for domestic tourism."
According to VisitEngland, just 4% (2m) of Brits plan to travel abroad over the Christmas and New Year period.
