WA Govt rejects tourism spending criticism
Western Australia’s Tourism Minister has defended the State Government’s marketing budget after criticism from the hotel industry.
The Australian Hotels Association (AHA) has described the level of expenditure and investment in tourism promotion as poor.
It made the claim while commenting on Rio Tinto’s decision to support the Government’s liquor trading reforms, saying the company should be contributing to WA’s struggling tourism budget.
But the Minister, Sheila McHale, says the AHA’s complaints are predictable and unfounded.
“The AHA do not support our liquor licensing, so they will use a range of arguments. In terms of funding to tourism, in 2001, the tourism budget was $30 million, ‘three zero’, in 2006 it is $50 million,” she said.
