Wales First Minister blasts ‘high risk’ scrapping of PCR test
First Minister of Wales has slammed the government for putting the health of the nations at risk.
Mark Drakeford strongly opposes the scrapping of day two PCR tests for international travellers arriving in the UK.
He calls for a ‘more precautionary approach’ and describes the government’s handling of international travel protocols as ‘chaotic.’
Last week, it was announced that the traffic light system for international travel is to be scrapped in England and fully vaccinated travellers will no longer need a pre-departure test before returning from a non-red list country.
"The UK Government’s approach to international travel during the pandemic has been among the most chaotic parts of its response," Drakeford said.
"It’s very hard indeed to follow their thinking in this area."
The Welsh Government is still mulling whether to adopt the same rules as England.
"We have consistently urged of them a more precautionary approach to defending the borders of the UK against the re-importation into the UK of Covid and particularly the importation of new variants."
Drakeford said removing the PCR test on day two is the ‘most concerning’ aspect.
