Wales nightclubs to close for New Year
There will be no New Year revelry at nightclubs in Wales.
Nightclubs will close in Wales from 27 December and First Minister Mark Drakeford is urging people to keep any social gatherings small.
People should avoid meeting with a ‘wider circles of friends.’
It has ‘astounded’ the industry.
"The industry are astounded by the announcement by Welsh Government, there is a lot of anger and frustration," said Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association.
"We have supported the public health strategy in Wales for two years, closures, debts, we’ve implemented Covid passes which is going very well in terms of the implementation, although it has lost us some trade."
Blanket closures are ‘a step too far.’
Kill says it is a risky measure that could backfire.
"The concern now that New Year’s Eve has been taken away is that those people who would normally socialise in clubs will displace into unregulated setting, without those mitigations which would be counter-productive."
Scots are also facing further restrictions in the lead up to Christmas.
Businesses are ‘legally required to take reasonable measures’ to curb transmission.
The government advises one-way systems in premises, and app-based ordering where feasible.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urges people to limit numbers for festive gatherings but insists ‘Christmas is not cancelled.’
