Walt Disney World workers plead for a delay in reopening parks

Tuesday, 23 Jun, 2020 0

Judging by the traffic levels on the newly launched advance reservation system, Disney fans cannot wait for the reopening of Walt Disney World next month.

However not everyone is quite as enthusiastic.

Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for Disney World to delay the reopening as Covid-19 cases continue to surge in Florida.

The Sunshine State just surpassed 100,000 confirmed cases of the virus.

On Monday another 3,000 infections were recorded, and so far more than 3,000 people have died.

The petition was launched by Disney workers and has garnered more than 4,000 signatures.

It is calling for a delay to protect the health of cast members.

"Because of the increase in cases suddenly, it is clear that theme parks – a non-essential business – should not be planning to operate until the cases have gone down again," it said.

"As individuals who work in the bustling tourism industry in central Florida, we are responsible for ensuring the safety of our guests and our fellow magic makers. We are encouraged to say something when we see something that we deem is unsafe so we’re speaking up."

"It is not fair to the people who work there to risk their lives, especially if they are at risk or have family members who are at risk. People are more important than making a profit."

The parks are set to reopen from July 11 with a limited capacity.
