West Coast hot spot for cruise line homeports
Los Angeles and Seattle are fast becoming two of the hottest homeports for cruises, says the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA).
Homeports are cities where cruise ships offer regular departures. And they are growing in popularity everywhere, but particularly on the West Coast.
The LA port, recently renovated to handle the largest ships, is expected to have one million passengers this year, surpassing last year’s 800,000.
Seattle will have 700,000 passengers this year, a big leap over last year.
“The growth of West Coast homeports is an extremely positive trend for the cruise industry, and part of an historic expansion of cruise line embarkation cities,” said Terry L. Dale, president and CEO of CLIA. “Cruise lines realize that North Americans desire departure ports within driving distance, eliminating the need to fly.”
He added cruise passengers now have a choice of 30 homeports.
