What’s new in the Minneapolis art scene

Monday, 29 Sep, 2022 0

Minneapolis has long had a reputation for being an arts and culture hub for the region.

Not resting on its laurels, the city continues to feature only-can-see-here exhibits, and world-class art. Here are some of the latest happenings in the City by Nature:

Botticelli and Renaissance Florence: Masterworks from the Uffizi at the Minneapolis Institute of Art Oct. 16 through Jan. 8, 2023. Paintings, sculptures, and prints from Mia’s collection will be shown alongside masterworks from Florence’s Uffizi Gallery. Included are rare paintings and drawings by Sandro Botticelli, such as the Pallas and the Centaur (c. 1482); works by his teacher (Fra Filippo Lippi) and colleagues (Domenico Ghirlandaio, Cosimo Rosselli, Perugino). Mia is the sole location for this exhibition, an enviable opportunity to see Uffizi stars that rarely travel outside Italy.

The Katherine E. Nash Gallery presents ‘A Picture Gallery of the Soul, from traditional photography to mixed media and conceptual art of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, over 100 Black American artists honor, celebrate, and interpret Black history, culture and politics in the United States. Through Dec. 10 at the University of Minnesota.
MSP Liminal, described as a “poetic glass intervention” that features hints of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s past, was installed recently across from Gate G17 on Concourse G at Terminal 1 by Miami-based Artist Monika Bravo. It is the first of several prominent works to be installed on the renovated concourse.
The Museum of Russian Art celebrates its anniversary with TMORA: 20 Years, now through Feb. 20, 2023. The exhibition features TMORA’s permanent collection including religious icons, paintings, Soviet-era posters and artifacts, peasant crafts, samovars, and other works.

Arts + Rec Uptownan art-forward entertainment venue opened their rooftop bar in the Uptown neighborhood. Serving “gastrofair,”- their take on elevated fair food like the Dorito-crusted cod, fried pickles and breakfast waffle dog, visitors will find a collection of fantastic art from local and regional artists. This fall, phase two will open and feature over 200,000 square feet in the Seven Points (former Calhoun Square) building with a black box theater, a lively speakeasy and an artist-designed 9-hole mini golf course.

Sherlock Holmes” The Exhibition opens Oct. 20 and runs through April 2, 2023, at the Minnesota History Center. Visitors will journey into the mind of the world’s most iconic detective in this visually stunning new exhibit. It features original manuscripts and period artifacts on loan from the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota Library, the world’s largest gathering of material related to Sherlock Holmes and his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Ultimate Touchdown Tour, is a new, specialized, VIP tour program highlighting the preparation for gameday prior to select Minnesota Vikings NFL games where visitors will see the Vikings Locker Room being set for gameday, broadcast spaces being prepared for media operations and never-before-seen views of one of the most luxury private bars inside U.S. Bank Stadium. The tour ends with a chance to play on the turf, get photos on the 50-yard-line, and score the ultimate touchdown.
