Where to find the best snow this week
In the Alps, heavy rain earlier this week washed some snow away from lower slopes in some resorts, although some of the highest resorts in France and Switzerland saw large dumps of fresh snow. Even better, the outlook is improving and snow was forecast at low levels today, which should help the lower slopes recover from the rain.
In Austria, St Anton was one of the resorts to benefit from a dump of snow on Sunday, while good powder skiing was also reported in Stubai and Pitzal. Further snow is forecast for today and Thursday, with the heaviest falling in the Arlberg.
In Italy, little has changed since last week, except Cervinia and La Thuile both got at least 30 cms of snow last weekend. Up to 25 cms more is expected across many regions today.
In the Pyrenees, the weather is spring- like but expected to turn colder, which will firm up the runs.
Great skiing can be found in Scandinavia, with many resorts having benefited from fresh snow last weekend. In Norway, it was still snowing on Monday, bringing plenty of fresh powder.
Eastern Europe was also skiing well on Monday, with the sun out across Bulgaria. Elsewhere the clouds were somewhat thicker, although some fresh snowfall was reported at Spindleruv in the Czech Republic and at Rosa Khutor in Russia.
Some fantastic skiing was on offer across the western states of the USA and Canada. Both Utah and Colorado have seen some huge snowfall totals over the past few days. California has not missed out either, especially at the resort of Mammoth where more than a metre of new snow fell on the upper mountain over the weekend.
The dry winter continues on the east coast of the USA, but conditions in Quebec in Canada to the north have improved significantly following some decent snowfall in recent days. More is needed however to enable all runs to open.
