Where US travelers are going for spring break

Thursday, 20 Mar, 2007 0

College spring breakers are heading for the beaches these days but the most popular other alternative US traveler destinations in March and April are ranging from Orlando, FL, to Seattle, WA, says Orbitz.

“With its 2nd annual Alternative Spring Break Index, Orbitz announces unconventional spring break destinations ideal for couples and families looking for a vacation away from overly popular college party destinations,” the company says.

Three Florida cities were in the top ten, including Tampa and Naples-Ft. Myers.

Number two on the list was San Francisco, followed by San Diego, San Juan, Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, Reno, Maui and Seattle.

Viator, a company that provides tours and other travel services, puts Cancun at the top of its top ten hottest spring break destinations, followed by Las Vegas, Las Cabos and Puerto Vallarta. Florida is represented here at No. 5 with Key West.

No. 6 is Acapulco, Mexico, followed by Miami, Nassau, Negril (Jamacia) and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic

“Cancun offers a vibrant nightlife and tropical paradise experience,” Viator says.

Punta Cana is “the Caribbean’s fastest growing resort area with powdery white beaches and exciting activities,” according to the company.

Viator provides access to more than 5,000 sightseeing tours, attractions and activities in 450-plus destinations in more than 75 countries. It also provides customer reviews, star ratings and travel blogs. Viator is the Latin word for traveler.

Orbitz, a brand of Travelport, Inc., is an online travel company offering leisure and business travelers a selection of low airfares, as well as deals on lodging, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages and other travel. The site says it was created to address consumers’ need for an unbiased, comprehensive display of fares and rates in a single location.

And where are the college kids going?

It depends on who you ask, but Cancun and Orlando are often at the top of the list.

And Puerto Rico, which….no surprise…has a lower drinking age than some other popular college age destinations.
