Where Vegas Failed, the Cruise Industry Continues to Sail in Family Friendly Cruise Control

Tuesday, 07 Oct, 2008 0

A decade ago, Vegas attempted to change its image to become a family friendly destination. While the Vegas experiment failed, the cruising industry has sailed. Family cruisers are the fastest growing demographic in the industry. Unlike the empty-nester cruising couple, families travel in packs with extended family members, which is win win for cruise line executives.

While most cruise ships have children and teen programs on their ships, some cruise lines have made family travel their main mission.

Disney has taken the Imagineering elements of their theme parks and applied them to their cruise line. This concept has been so successful that Disney is now doubling its fleet by ordering two new ships.

Others are setting their own lofty, Disney-like goals when it comes to cruising and families. Royal Caribbean and Carnival are dedicating a massive amount of space for children and teen areas on their ships. On several of their ships, up to 25 per cent of the passengers on board are children or teens.

These cruise lines have excellent family programs, but they are not the only ones catering to families. Most cruise lines have all kinds of children’s programs with their own dedicated areas. When planning your next family friendly getaway, check with your cruise line of choice and inquire about family fun and programs for children and teens. You’d be surprised by what is on offer.
