Which? backs action against airlines breaching refund rules
Consumer advocate Which? has backed calls for reforms so action can be taken against airlines which fail to refund customers for cancelled flights.
Lord Young of Cookham, a former transport secretary, said tens of thousands of passengers had filed complaints to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) about refunds.
Lord Young cited ‘inexcusable delays’ in getting reimbursed.
Which? says the time for action is overdue.
"Which? has long been calling for meaningful action from the regulator in response to airlines breaking the law on refunds on a scale that has never been seen before – but it has been unable to do so, so it’s clear that the time for reform is now," said Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel.
It called on the government to give the regulator the tools to take meaningful action and deter airlines from violating consumer law.
"The CAA has also asked for stronger powers, including the ability to fine airlines directly for breaches of the law. The government’s aviation recovery plan should set out steps it will take to address this, to ensure airlines do not feel empowered to brazenly break consumer law again in the future," Boland said.
