Wild about Waikiki
United States: Legendary Hawaiian stretch of sand voted the world’s best beach
Hawaii’s Waikiki beach in the world has been identified as the best in the world – according to a graduate student who won the chance to carry out an extensive “survey”.
West Sussex student Pete Shannon, 26, won the trip from the online travel provide Expedia, which paid for the seven-week “experiment”. The lucky winner travelled 54,000 miles for his labour of love, during which time he visited 20 beaches around the world.
According to the online news provider Ananova, The contenders were chosen by a poll previously carried out by Expedia, and were rated according to 12 criteria including sand temperature, noise, cleanliness, transparency of water, and cost. Beaches were rated out of five in each category.
Shannon stated: “With its stunning views, great activities and friendly, welcoming atmosphere, Waikiki has something for everyone and is worthy of the title of the World’s Best Beach.” The Maldives’ Ilhuru Beach took second spot, while Cancun, in Mexico was in third place.
And our very own Brighton Beach? It came 20th out of 20, just below Australia’s Bondi Beach.
