Wildfires close part of Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route
Part of Spain’s Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route is off limits as wildfires envelop the region.
Spain is facing one of the largest wave of wildfires on record.
Hikers have been told to stay away.
“This is a fire situation that we haven’t experienced for 20 years,” Defense Minister Margarita Robles said.
Last week thousands of hectares in Galicia and around were scorched, which disrupted train services.
It also affected a 50 km stretch of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage path from the towns of Astorga to Ponferrada.
This route attracts thousands of walkers every summer.
The progress of the fires are fuelled by high temperatures of over 100 degrees and strong winds.
Nearly 3,000 troops have been deployed to flight the wildfires.
Overall, Southern Europe is in the middle of one of its worst wildfire seasons for decades with Iberia among the hardest hit regions.
About 344,400 hectares of land have burned so far in Spain during one of its longest ever heatwaves.
