Saturday, 16 Nov, 2023 0

With snow in the mountains of Tuolumne County predicted to fall in the coming weeks, Dodge Ridge mountain resort is set to open in late November.

It will offer over 50 skiing and boarding runs, as well as winter hiking and snowshoeing in Yosemite National Park.

In addition, the holiday cheer is evident throughout the county, with a host of festive celebrations planned this winter.

Here’s what to see, do and experience this winter in Tuolumne County, CA.

Rewarding hikes

Both the county and Yosemite National Park have trails that remain open during the winter season. The hike to Carlon Falls takes walkers along Tuolumne River, and rewards them with a view of the stunning waterfall. For a more challenging adventure the hike to Wapama Falls leads to some of Yosemite’s tallest waterfalls, with incredible views of Hetch Hetchy valley along the route. Visitors looking for something a little out of the ordinary will enjoy snowshoeing from the Tuolumne Grove down into the peaceful giant sequoia grove.

Skiing and snowboarding at Dodge Ridge resort

Dodge Ridge resort is set to open in the coming weeks. The resort is a firm favourite amongst families for skiing and snowboarding, as the resort is the closest snow to the San Francisco Bay Area. The family built resort covers 862 acres with 12 lifts, and has skiing for beginners up to advanced levels. With equipment hire and lessons available it’s the perfect resort for the whole family.

Columbia State Historic Park festive celebrations

Columbia State Historic Park plays host to several festive events and activities throughout the winter months. Visitors can experience what Christmas in a Gold Rush town may have looked like in the 1850’s. They will hear Christmas stories from ole’ timer miners, taste roasted chestnuts and learn to make old-fashioned crafts. On 10 December 10th visitors will be treated to the Columbia All Equestrian Parade. The colourful judged parade is a Columbia tradition that is open to riders of all ages. Those in search of sweet treats will also get the chance to see traditional Candy Cane Making demonstrations at Nelson’s Columbia Candy Kitchen every Saturday and Sunday between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Downtown Sonora transform into Christmas Town

Visitors to the historic gold rush town of Sonora will be immersed in the festive spirit, throughout November and December. Enjoy a trip to Christmas Tree Lane with over 50 trees uniquely decorated by local non-profits and Santa’s Village in Courthouse Park. The 40th annual Sonora Christmas Parade will also be taking place. Both locals and visitors can enjoy the lighting ceremony of the iconic Red Church and Downtown Sonora visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus at Santa’s House. Don’t miss the Best Window Contest, bazaars, craft making, and Holly Jolly Wagon rides.
