Womens Football World Cup – Could there be a better place to hold it?
In just over a week’s time, on December 6, the draw for the 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup will take place in Ottawa. In a newly expanded format of 24 competing nations, including England, all eyes will focused on who is drawn against whom during the group games. Yet just as importantly, the thousands of fans heading to the tournament will be keen to learn the location of their matches.
Canada makes for the ideal destination for a tournament of this nature which will be focused not only on the competitive sport but also on the supporters, their comfort, safety, pleasure and fun.
Canadians are old hands at organizing memorable sporting occasions and the World Cup will be no different. Canada’s modern stadiums are varied in both size and facilities, all pitches will be synthetic but all venues will have an assortment of fan events planned throughout the duration of the month-long tournament.
These are cities well-endowed with bars, superb regional cuisine and a genuine love of the beautiful game. Each has its own range of attractions such as the world’s largest tidal drop south of Moncton or a memorable river cruise in Ottawa but the key thing that that strikes any visitor is the genuine warmth of the Canadian people.
Any visitor will recognise that Canadians are amongst the friendliest and most welcoming of any nation in the world. You will be immediately put you at ease, as though you are meeting a new friend. Canadians are eager to have fun, to enjoy the craic and to ensure that all visitors will go away, notwithstanding the result of the matches, with happy memories.
Happy Canadians greet the lone Brit
We will be running a series of destination movies between now and the start of the tournament where we show some of the things you will be able to enjoy this coming summer in Canada. We speak to local people, listen to local music, drink local beer and eat local food. We also have interviews with some of the professionals who support the ever expanding interest in football including ex Liverpool keeper Bruce Grobbelaar who has been resident in Canada for some years and is now the goal keeping coach for professional men’s side Ottawa Fury.
The purpose of the coverage is to try and encapsulate the essence of what a Canadian experience will be like this summer, to give some hints and tips but most of all to ensure as much support for England as possible!
