World Cup washout for Germany?
The fear of rowdy, violent football fans is preventing people from attending the World Cup in Germany.
Findings of a poll by online travel information firm TripAdvisor prior to the tournament kicking off next week, show that more than a third (37%) of people are put off visiting Germany during the World Cup because of football hooligans.
The survey of more than 1,500 travellers found that the majority will be staying at home although less than 10% were worried about the threat of terrorism.
Despite the World Cup, the biggest attraction for travellers to Germany continues to be culture and history, according to 41%. The World Cup host cities that people most want to visit are Berlin, Munich and Cologne. The least popular were Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund and Kaiserslautern.
Half of the survey respondents have visited Germany and about another quarter intend to visit the country in the future.
Getting back to the football, almost 20% forecast that Brazil will win the World Cup while England and Germany were the second and third favourite respectively.
