World tourism leaders have paid tribute to destinations and companies who have led the way in responsible tourism.

World Travel and Tourism Council president Jean-Claude Baumgarten, speaking at its annual summit in Washington, said it was crucial the industry protected the natural and cultural heritage for future generations of tourists.

At the WTTC’s Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, he said: “How tourism grows and develops is of great consequence to our environment and to the people whose lives its growth will impact.”

The destination award winner went to Mexico’s Sierra Gorda, a biosphere reserve which has World Heritage status.

Campi ya Kanzi in Kenya, a tented camp site on a private ranch owned by Maasai herdsmen, picked up the conservation award.

The investor in people category was won by Hotel Punta Islita in Costa Rica with Fairmont Hotels and Resorts in Canada triumphing in the global tourism business sector.
