WTTC touts commercial benefits of more women in travel
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) restated the importance of women’s engagement in the travel industry.
The key role of women un travel was reinforced at the Women Deliver Global Conference hosted in Kigali, Rwanda recently.
The conference served as a platform to address the challenges faced by women in the tourism sector and to explore strategies to overcome them.
It also aimed to promote equal opportunities for women in the sector.
According to WTTC, women constitute approximately 54% of the tourism workforce but faces disparities like lower pay and job security.
These disparities were reflected during the Covid-19 downturn.
A majority of the 62 million jobs lost in the sector were women’s jobs.
Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “It is proven that companies that have 50% women in their leadership make more money.”
“This makes even more sense as women make the buying decisions on where to go on holiday.”
“Putting women centre stage in travel will ensure a better future for the sector and the global economy.”
The conference brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and advocates.
The panel discussions explored barriers to entry, obstacles, and ecosystem limitations.
It underscored the important role of mentorship in empowering young women and girls in business.
