Yogyakarta in the clear
The Indonesian city of Yogyakarta has been given the all clear after recent volcanic activity around nearby Mount Merapi.
Surrounding areas in central Java have been declared safe and fully accessible for tourists.
UNWTO executive director, Márcio Favilla said after visiting the region, “Most of the tourist infrastructure has not been affected by the eruption and the rapid response of the Indonesian authorities and the international community has allowed for a quick return to normality.”
UNWTO confirmed that basic infrastructure, including hotels, restaurants and roads, is intact and that Yogyakarta’s international airport is open and fully operational.
