CrowdStrike acknowledged the initial outage that caused airlines around the world to ground flights. However, it takes issue with Delta’s allegations of gross negligence. It cannot be liable for issues Delta alone suffered for several more days. Delta CEO Ed Bastian said the IT outage cost the airline about $500 million in total. This includes operational costs, refunds and compensation for customers’ hotel and transport costs. Delta was forced to cancel about 6,000 flights over a week, which impacted over 500,000 passengers. The airline is now under a US DOT probe for the way it handled the outage fallout. "CrowdStrike reiterates its apology to Delta, its employees and its customers and is empathetic to the circumstances they face,” the cybersecurity firm said in response. “However, CrowdStrike is highly disappointed in Delta's suggestion that CrowdStrike acted inappropriately and strongly rejects any allegation that it was grossly negligent or committed willful misconduct.” Delta alleged CrowdStrike failed to do testing and validation for the software update which CrowdStrike denies. “Should Delta pursue this path, Delta will have to explain to the public, its shareholders, and a jury why CrowdStrike took responsibility swiftly, transparently and constructively - while Delta did not."Related News Stories:

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian put the cost at around $500 million. As well as the missed revenue due to days of cancellations, Bastian said it paid out ‘ tens of millions of dollars per day’ in compensation and hotels. This lasted for five days as most airlines recovered pretty quickly once the outage was resolved. The airline said it has processed ‘thousands’ of refund requests. The airline canceled over 5,000 flights. The outage was caused by a failed software update by CrowsStrike which took thousands of websites and online services offline which used Microsoft systems. Once fixed, Delta has further issues for days over its crew scheduling system.Related News Stories: Delta orders larger Airbus A350 jets - TravelMole Delta One JFK lounge opens Delta finds fake aircraft parts on planes Visit Mississippi - TravelMole Investigation opened into Delta meltdown KLM launching Portland flights Drug money smuggling ring busted at New York JFK airport Carnival orders three new ships, in a new class UK-US transatlantic flights at record high Flight diverted after passenger urinates in aisle

Hundreds more flights were delayed or canceled Tuesday after grounding more than 1,200 a day earlier. The Department of Transportation will open an investigation. The airline’s struggles could continue for the rest of the week. Delta customers have been advised to contact the DOT to determine whether the airline is providing adequate customer assistance. The DOT said it has already received a ‘high volume of consumer complaints’ about Delta since Friday. “We want to hear from passengers who believe that Delta has not complied with USDOT-enforced passenger protection requirements,” the Transportation Department said. Delta is cooperating with the investigation. “We remain entirely focused on restoring our operation,” Delta said. “Delta teams are working tirelessly to care for and make it right for customers impacted by delays and cancellations.” Most airlines are up and running will full flight operations. However, Delta’s is being hampered with problems with its crew tracking system. The airline said it will likely continue for a few more days. Delta effectively doesn’t know where its flight crew are. Some have said they have been sleeping at the airline as the system cannot book them layover hotels. The prolonged meltdown has cost Delta about $163 million as of the end of Monday, according to an aviation analyst.Related News Stories: New FAA probe: Boeing aircraft testing records 'may be falsified' Celebrity Edge avoids Hawaii prosecution after alleged coastal ... The woman’s complaint says Duane Brick, a Delta employee at the time, assaulted her. Brick, a former Delta mechanic, was a passenger on the flight. He has since plead guilty to abusive sexual contact and will be sentenced later this year. He faces up to two years in prison. The assault happened on a flight as the woman was flying home to Seattle from a Taylor Swift concert in Phoenix. The lawsuit claims Brick was ‘visibly intoxicated’. The woman and a witness informed cabin crew at the time of the assault. The suit alleges gross negligence on the part of the airline, and assault and battery. It says the airline failed to monitor Brick’s condition after serving him too much alcohol. “Delta owes the highest duty of care and has a legal duty to provide airline passengers, including the plaintiff, with a safe flight that is free from unauthorized and abusive sexual contact," the lawsuit states. "Everyone should feel safe to fall asleep on a plane without the risk of being groped and sexually assaulted," attorney Mark Lindquist said.Related News Stories: Delta sues Florida for overpaid taxes - TravelMole Guest sues Vegas hotel over scorpion sting Florida for foodies: Jimmy's Taste of Florida to air on ITV - TravelMole Thai Airways makes big Airbus order - TravelMole Trip Affiliates partners with China travel platform HeyTrip
