1.5 million Sydneysiders head for the hills when Bush comes to town

New research* by lastminute.com.au, claimed to be Australia’s travel and lifestyle site, reveals more than a third of Sydneysiders are leaving town for the APEC long weekend with the majority heading to the Central Coast, Hunter Valley and South Coast of NSW.

Managing Director of lastminute.com.au Adam Johnson said, “The APEC summit is spurring a massive holiday rush with people getting the hell out of town for a much needed break.”

“What’s interesting is that there’s also an influx of Aussies heading into Sydney, many saying it’s for some bargain luxury accommodation and quieter sightseeing.”

According to the study of over 4,800 Australians, the top ten holiday destinations for Sydney residents this APEC long weekend are:

Central Coast, NSW

North Coast, NSW

South Coast, NSW

Gold Coast, NSW

Melbourne, VIC

Hunter Valley, NSW

Blue Mountains, NSW

Brisbane, QLD

Whitsundays, QLD

Snowy Mountains, NSW

As for those hardy Sydneysiders staying put, the research shows 47% will steer clear of the CBD and all that comes with the Bush intrusion – mobile phone drop-out zones and random security checks, while 41% are not yet sure what they’ll be up to over the long weekend.

As Sydney residents head for the bush, one million Aussies living outside Sydney are braving the heightened security and heading for APEC territory.

53% of these had plans to come to Sydney prior to knowing about APEC and aren’t budging with their plans while others stated they were hoping to either bag discounted hotel accommodation catch a glimpse of the APEC leaders, or take advantage of a quieter and less congested city.

lastminute.com.au offers the chance to save 75% off hotel rooms with lastminute.com.au Secret Hotels, where you don’t know the name of the hotel until after you’ve booked, just the general location.

Whether people are heading into town or out of town, Johnson says people will be getting a good deal.

“With perceptions that Sydney will be quieter and less crowded, those coming to town for the APEC weekend will be in for a treat with luxury hotels offering significant reductions”.

“We say head for the bush but if not, grab a 5 star hotel on the cheap on lastminute.com.au and protest in style!” says Johnson.
