10 Best Travel Companies To Work For

Tuesday, 11 Jun, 2013 0

Yes, the winner is a travel agency. But no, it’s probably not yours.

To win, your company must offer employees a great CEO with an open-door policy, regular salary increases, and good benefits.

The best travel company to work for in the United States is Orbitz, the online agency headed by CEO Barney Harford, who, by the way, got an 86% approval rating from his employees.

The ratings, by online jobs and career site Glassdoor.com, were based on reports submitted by people in the travel industry between June 2012 and June 2013.

This is the second consecutive win for Orbitz. This year it was ranked 4.0 out of a possible 5.

Orbitz employees mention their smart and creative co-workers and fun technology, and a unique company culture with an open-door policy that really works. Good pay fits in there somewhere, too.

Taking the number-two and three spots are Southwest Airlines, with a 3.9 rating, and JetBlue, at 3.8. Southwest employees mention flexible schedules, travel and medical benefits, and regular salary increases; Jet Blue folks love their CEO, Dave Barger, who received an 87% approval rating.

Next come the hotels, the Ritz-Carlton and the Four Seasons, both popular for the friends and family discounts they offer, as well as their upscale international customers, workplace environment, great training and support from senior leadership.

Numbers six to 10 were: Trip Advisor, Marriott, Disney Parks & Resorts, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, and AirTran Holdings.

(Note that the online nature of the poll might have influenced the outcome toward younger and more tech-oriented employees.)

Overall, travel industry employees love the perks and benefits, but not so much the working on holidays and the tough competition.
