US airports are braced for a late summer surge of passengers with up to 14 million travelers expected to take to the skies over the Labor Day holiday.

Aviation industry group Airlines for America forecast the figure for the period from Wednesday, August 27 through Tuesday, September 2, with the busiest day for travel on Friday.

A4A said US airlines have increased seat capacity to cope with the demand.

The prediction represents a 2% increase compared to last year.

In a separate report, AAA auto club says average air fares for the period are up 2% over last year, from $214 to $219 based on a discounted round-trip fare on the 40 most popular domestic routes.

AAA predicts a combined total of 34.7 million Americans will take to the road and air during the holiday period, traveling at least 50 miles from home.
