A crate way to travel …
A Cuban woman smuggled herself to the USA in a packing crate with nothing except a mobile phone and a flask of water, according to a report in The Times.
The newspaper reports that the woman, in her twenties, was found by workers at a shipping company unloading cargo from a flight from the Bahamas after they heard a voice coming from within the crate.
The newspaper reports that the woman was held by immigration officers, but that, under new laws, she will be released.
The flight was just 15 minutes long, which meant that the woman did not have to withstand low temperatures experienced at altitude for more than a short while.
A customs officer is quoted as saying: “We don’t recommend that people try to migrate here this way. This is extremely dangerous. Luckily for her, it is a short flight from the Bahamas.”
