A year after Irma, a rejuvenated Hawks Cay Resort reopens
Nearly a year after Hurricane Irma pounded the Florida Keys, one of its leading resorts formally reopened to visitors.
Hawks Cay Resort, near Marathon in the Middle Keys is now fully reopen and back in business.
The subtropical island resort underwent an extensive $50 million construction project to repair damage caused by Irma, and enhance amenities.
It now sports completely renovated rooms, two new restaurants with fine-dining and fast-casual options and the new Oasis Cay, an adults-only relaxation zone with pool, bar and grill.
With the resort’s 177 hotel rooms back on line, the Keys’ hotel capacity is now up to 90% operational a year after the devastating storm, Keys tourism officials said.
"After Hurricane Irma we didn’t just look at recovering from the storm. That would have been the quickest and easiest way to do this, but it was an opportunity for us to reimagine Hawks Cay. We just took our time to do this right," said Hawks Cay managing director Sheldon Suga.
