AHA and TTF tell the NSW Government to recover tourism
Two leading National and New South Wales tourism organisations have joined the current industry wide criticism of the New South Wales Government’s tourism policies and expenditure, by calling for a tourism recovery plan as their Australian Hotels Assocation and Tourism and Transport Forum joint study has shown that the tourism employment rate in the State has failed to keep pace with general employment rates.
The study has revealed that the industry now accounts for 5.7% of the total employment in the state, down from 6.2% in 1997/98, with TTF Managing Director Chris Brown, a vocal critic of NSW Government tourism policies and budget allocations, expressing his great concern that tourism employment has not kept pace with overall employment growth in the state or the national tourism employment growth rate of 8.1%.
He added, that instead of blossoming after the 2000 Olympics, it appears that NSW is losing out to rivals, with TTF and AHA calling for a State Tourism Recovery Plan in the forthcoming state elections to assist the industry with the timing considered excellent and current Minster for Tourism Sandra Nori not standing.
AHA president John Thorpe said, “The people of New South Wales are looking to Government and opposition to commit to turn around this situation”.
