Air Canada criticized for failing Canadian bilingual laws

Canada’s official languages commissioner has criticized Air Canada for its continuing violations of bilingual laws.

Commissioner Graham Fraser singled out the carrier as the most complained about institution during 2013-2014, sharing the top spot with Canada Border Services Agency.

He said he was surprised the carrier doesn’t consider bilingual marketing as a competitive advantage.

"Instead of looking at the question of offering services in the two official languages as a marketing asset, it appears to treat it as a burden," said Fraser.

Air Canada takes a different view and takes its linguistic obligations seriously.

‘We regularly work with the official languages commissioner to improve our ability to serve our clients in the language of their choice,’ the airline said.

Yvon Godin, the New Democrats’ official languages spokesman wants stronger action against bilingual violations and said Air Canada should be hit with sanctions.

"It’s time to take action, Air Canada continues to violate the official languages law," Godin said.
