Air Canada is the latest carrier to collaborate on blockchain-based distribution with Swiss tech start-up, Winding Tree.

Air Canada signed a letter of intent to work with Winding Tree to develop a decentralized, open-source platform for travel distribution

It will lead to easier access to inventory direct from suppliers, and ultimately bring down distribution costs, the companies say.

"Air Canada recognizes the importance of leveraging this next generation technology. We plan to integrate Air Canada’s Direct Connect API with Winding Tree’s public blockchain platform, giving blockchain-savvy users the ability to access our content directly from the source," said Keith Wallis, director of global product distribution at Air Canada.

Winding Tree is developing an open-source distribution platform specifically for the travel industry which it hopes will remove barriers for entry for all suppliers large and small.

"As the first North American carrier to work with Winding Tree’s public blockchain platform, Air Canada is showing itself to be a real leader in innovation," said Pedro Anderson, Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Winding Tree," said Pedro Anderson, Winding Tree founder and COO.

Lufthansa, Air France-KLM and Air New Zealand have already signed up as partners to Winding Tree.
