Air India outage causes second day of disruption

Air India says all flight operations were back up after a system outage on Saturday but flight delays have lingered.

The airline says 137 Sunday flights experienced major disruption with an average three-hour delay.

The ripple effect to its operations could last into Monday.

The outage affected thousands of passengers on Saturday.

The glitch occurred after routine maintenance caused the five-hour outage of the server run by aviation tech firm SITA.

It caused widespread chaos as check-in software went down affecting airport counters and web check-in.

An estimated 149 flights were delayed on Saturday stranding passengers at airports around the world. Many took to social media to vent their frustrations.

Chairman and managing director Ashwani Lohani said the biggest delays affected mostly domestic services due to the short turnaround times but there were also some delays to international services.

The glitch caused some travellers to miss inbound connections, who were accommodated in hotels.

"Globally airlines experience such outages. We regret the inconvenience caused to passengers by the snag," Lohani said.
