Air New Zealand suspends Christchurch – Los Angeles Service
Air New Zealand has suspended its non-stop Christchurch – Los Angeles twice weekly service during the off-season period from 3 April to 28 October 2006.
Group General Manager Marketing, Network & Sales Norm Thompson said passenger numbers during this period were insufficient to sustain a direct service to Los Angeles from Christchurch.
“Last year we operated a service on this route once a week, from April through to October, with disappointing results as most traffic during the Northern Hemisphere summer is traditionally outbound from New Zealand.
“Our Christchurch customers will be able to connect with our double daily service to Los Angeles from Auckland (and three times daily on Fridays and Sundays) and they will travel at no extra cost than the direct service from Christchurch, ”said Mr Thompson.
Cargo to Los Angeles will also be carried via Auckland.
Air New Zealand commenced the Christchurch – Los Angeles service in November 2004 and operated thrice-weekly services until March 05 when these were reduced to one service a week.
The thrice-weekly services were reinstated in mid-December 05 but passenger numbers have been less than expected during the current peak summer months.
Air New Zealand’s direct service between Christchurch and Los Angeles will be reinstated from 29 October 2006 with three services per week operating from that date.
