Air Transat nixes Nicaragua flights due to ‘ongoing civil unrest’
Canada’s Transat has dealt a blow to the struggling tourism industry of Nicaragua by cancelling all flights for the upcoming winter season.
Demand has tanked due to continued civil unrest across the Central American state, Transat says.
Transat had planned to fly twice a week to Managua from Toronto and once out of Montreal.
The decision to nix the winter program arose from ‘ongoing civil unrest and weak demand’ Transat spokeswoman Debbie Cabana told AFP.
"Customers who have reservations at the destination can change their booking or get a full refund," Cabana said.
Anti-government demonstrations began earlier this year over social security reforms that led to several days of violence which killed more than 30 people.
The reforms were nixed by the government but sporadic protests have continued.
Canada has continued to warn its citizens against non-essential travel to Nicaragua.
