AirAsia to begin Hawaii flights by mid-2017

Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia said it will finally start flying to the US next year.

The carrier’s long haul unit AirAsia X will start flying to Hawaii during the first half of 2017, according to a Wall Street Journal report, citing an airline spokesman.

It had already pushed back a projected launch date due to delays in getting approval from Japanese regulators and it still awaits a permit from the  US department of transportation.

Flights to Honolulu will depart from its Kuala Lumpur hub via Osaka in Japan.

AirAsia X had originally planned to launch the route in November this year.

The WSJ also suggests AirAsia X will speed up plans to resume flights to Europe by leasing Boeing 777 long-haul planes.

The carrier planned to restart routes to Europe only after receiving new Airbus A330neo jets which are not due for delivery until 2018.
