AirAsia X looks to Gatwick for a boost
Kuala Lumpur-based budget carrier AirAsia X, which is switching its operations to London Gatwick from out-of-town Stansted airport in October, hopes the move will drive more high-yield business out of the UK.
AirAsia X has blamed a combination of the UK’s air passenger duty, high fuel costs and a tight UK economy for a decline in traffic, although these costs and circumstances will not change with the move to Gatwick.
AirAsia X will launch from Gatwick on October 24, flying five times a week to Kuala Lumpur – moving to six flights a week from mid-December.
From Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia X and stable mate AirAsia have connections across Asia and Australia.
The airline hopes the move to Gatwick, with its good connections to London and popularity with passengers, can absorb an expected hike in AirAsia X fares on the route.
AirAsia X has just launched services to Paris from Kuala Lumpur.
