Airbnb host fined for racist remarks

An AirBnB host who made racist remarks to an Asian-American guest who wanted to rent her accommodation has been fined $5,000.

She was also ordered to attend a course on Asian-American studies and told to do community service with a civil rights organisation.

Tami Barker cancelled Dyne Suh’s booking for the Airbnb in Big Bear, California, at the last minute sending her a message saying: "One word says it all. Asian."

In messages sent via the AirBnB app, Ms Barker said: "I wouldn’t rent it to u if u were the last person on earth."

A later message said: "I will not allow this country to be told what to do by foreigners."

Later she added: "It’s why we have Trump".

The messages are shown in an emotional youtube video made by Ms Suh.

The fine is the first imposed since a partnership between AirBnB and California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), under which the DFEH can investigate discrimination complaints.
